“Either the United States will destroy ignorance or ignorance will destroy the United States.”
W.E.B. Du Bois turned scholarship into a weapon. The first Black American to earn a Harvard PhD—and a student in Europe under the shadow of empire—he returned determined to dismantle the lie of Black inferiority. His Souls of Black Folk gave us “double consciousness,” the still-radical idea that identity under oppression is fractured but resilient.
Du Bois co-founded the NAACP and edited The Crisis, using journalism to wage war on Jim Crow. He wasn’t just a thinker; he was an agitator, unapologetically socialist, and eventually hounded into exile. At his desk in the NAACP office, he wasn’t writing theory—he was writing battle plans.
