Sojourner Truth was both preacher and prophet, a woman who refused to let anyone tell her who she was. Born enslaved in New York, she escaped with her infant daughter and then spent the rest of her life breaking chains with words sharper than steel. Her “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech burned through the 19th century, calling out the twin hypocrisies of racism and sexism in one stroke.

Truth wasn’t educated in the formal sense—her education was survival, faith, and the ability to read injustice out loud until the world had to listen. She recruited Black troops for the Union Army, fought for women’s suffrage, and kept forcing America to reckon with its broken promises. Truth wasn’t polite, she wasn’t patient—she was relentless. And that relentlessness is why her voice still carries.
