For that, Athens condemned him to death in 399 BCE, charging him with “corrupting the youth” and disrespecting the gods. Offered the chance to escape, he refused, drinking hemlock instead. His last lesson was simple and devastating: living unexamined is worse than dying. Socrates became philosophy’s first martyr, turning relentless questioning into a way of life. He reminds us that real thinking is dangerous, that authority hates doubt, and that sometimes the most radical act is simply asking, “Why?”
