DOLLY PARTON SPENT MORE THAN SIXTY YEARS proving that rhinestones and substance are not mutually exclusive. A songwriter of extraordinary range, a country-music institution, an actress, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and one of America's great self-invented public figures, Dolly built an empire without ever pretending she came from anywhere but the mountains of East Tennessee.
This design pairs a classic black-and-white portrait with oversized DOLLY typography for a shirt that needs very little explanation. It's a tribute to big hair, sharp wit, working-class roots, and the woman who gave the world “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and a cover in 1981 of Woody Guthrie's"Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)" about the 1948 Los Gatos DC-3 crash that killed 32 persons on board, mostly Mexican farm laborers, including some from the bracero guest worker program. News reports at the time didn't even print their names — just 'deportees.' Guthrie wrote the song so they'd be remembered as people. Dolly's cover carried that same insistence forward. Despite always telling it straight, standing up for the poor, the working class, immigrants, the LGBTQ community with a vision of radical acceptance of all human beings of every type and stripe, she somehow became more beloved with every decade.
