Bill Haywood—nicknamed “Big Bill”—was a one-eyed giant of labor radicalism, the muscle and roar of the IWW. He organized miners, lumberjacks, and migratory workers, the people capitalism chewed up and spat out, and he did it with a raw defiance that scared both bosses and the government.
Haywood believed in direct action over polite petitions—strikes, boycotts, and solidarity strong enough to shut down entire industries. To him, the working class wasn’t just fighting for better wages—it was fighting for control of the world. Hounded by the state, he eventually fled to Soviet Russia, but his legend stayed in America’s picket lines. Haywood made class war feel real, because he was living it.
